Journal: Time stands still for no man. Time heals all wounds. God works through the tapestry of time. These things are just going to take time. You can't go around it you have to go through it. As much as I know these things to be trust I just want to wake up tomorrow and it be some time in the future where things are better. I want to control time.

Journaling: I have never seen anyone capable of getting a room dirty the way that you boys can. It doesn’t even take you long to do it. All you need is a few minutes alone with your boys and you can turn a perfectly clean room into something that looks like a mine went off. I know you didn’t learn it from me so it must be a talent you were born with. Now if you were only born with the talent of cleaning up.

Journaling: You have loved kindergarten so far this year. You are so lucky because you have a wonderful teacher. Mrs. Warrick, she loves you children and absolutely loves teaching. She always has something fun planned for you kids to work on. The first few weeks of school was all about Teddy Bears. You dressed them, you played games with them. You even took your favorite Teddy to school. At the end of the month you had a Teddy Bear Picnic and even took your cute Teddy Bears on a Parade! Kindergarten is so much FUN!

Journaling: When i was in college, the entire last semester was spent doing my student teaching. I was so lucky to be assigned to Mrs. Dotsie Alexander's 2nd grade class. I learned more during that 9 weeks than I learned in 4 years of classroom studies. These kids are all grown up now but I can still remember them all so well. My student teaching experience was fantastic!

Journaling: in two thousand two i graduated from byu-hawaii with a bachelors degree in social work. i never really had planned to go into social work, but when i made the decision, it felt right. i only worked in that field until two thousand four, right before bryleigh was born. but the things that i learned while was in school and those few years after were invaluable. because of my social work background, i have learned about human behavior and what makes people tick. i'm able to really see people and why they do what they do. it may not help me have any more tolerance for it, but i can usually figure out why people act the way they do. i'm grateful for my education and for the life lessons it has taught me! journaled 10.18.2010

S is for...

Hi Hodge Podgers!  It's Rachel here announcing a new week and a new letter!  Bring on your letter S layouts!  Remember this is all about YOU.  You and the letter S. Wanting some inspiration?  We're happy to oblige!

Journaling: I've always felt a need for a creative outlet, which is why I suppose I was first drawn to scrapbooking when pregnant with Ryan. I loved the idea of documenting my new baby's life, all while layering brilliant patterned papers and ribbons, arranging flowers, buttons, and felt elements, and then painting, glueing, doodling, inking, embossing, sewing, stapling, or stamping.

If I wasn't scrapbooking, I was usually devouring layout magazines, taking pictures, or journaling in preparation for my anticipated creative play.

Looking back on my life as a new mom I think I must have had post-partum depression. While I adored my baby who had come to us after a difficult four-year struggle with infertility and miscarriage, and greatly appreciated my opportunity to be a mother, I was sad and lonely. A lot.

Scrapbooking during naptimes became a therapy for me as I adjusted from well-respected career woman to under-appreciated stay-at-home mommy. It gave me the energy I needed to get through the next round of breastfeeding and poopy diapers by helping me notice the moments I knew I'd want to remember. It helped me see the good in my new stay-at-home life and gave me the creative outlet I needed to express these feelings. As I experimented with different styles and techniques, my confidence and knowledge of myself grew.

Now that we have three kids I have a lot less time to scrapbook but it's still a passion and even if I can't get to the creating part, I still try to jot down notes or sketch out an idea for a future page before the memory is lost.

JOURNALING:
I feel a constant struggle to balance—husband, kids, school, home, career, church, hobbies, community. Some days I am so exhausted and overwhelmed I hide in my room and cry because I'm not sure what else to do. After lots of sincere prayers and talks with family and friends, I'm beginning to see that I really just CAN'T DO IT ALL. At least not right now, all at once. And it's okay. My daily tasks or level of busyness don't define my worth--something I've been afraid of for a long time.

I'm beginning to understand there is a season for everything, and for me, this is my season of cuddling my babies. A season of reading books and catching caterpillars and singing silly songs. A season of planning birthday parties. A season of bike rides and trips to the park, and gifts of dandelions and shiny pebbles. A season of rare but must-make-meaningful date nights with Jared. A season of breathing through the tantrums and runny noses and messes and remembering that "this too shall pass." And most importantly, a season of learning to appreciate where I’m at--because one day I will miss this.

JOURNALING: Living in the South, Summer lasts a LONG
time. After nearly 7 months of scorching
Mississippi heat, when cool Fall air finally
arrives it's as if the entire Southern States
heave a huge sigh of relief. The air, the colors
and the wonderful Fall smells are finally on the way.
The leaves here begin to fall about mid-October
and from then til mid-November, just about
6 short weeks, we experience my absolute favorite
season of the year.

JOURNALING: Oh how I love the spring. There is something about those first few days of warm weather after a long cold winter. Just when you think the cold won’t ever stop and that you will always see snow on the ground, sunshine peaks through. The days become warmer and the grass starts to turn green again. You know at that point that grilling parties and swimming are not very far off. Shorts and ice cream eaten outside are only weeks away. I love knowing all that all of that is coming up and that we have the whole spring and summer ahead of us to enjoy it before the cold shuffles in again.
